XMLExtensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple, very flexible text format derived from SGML.Originally designed to meet the challenges of large-scale electronic publishing, XML is playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web and elsewhere. XML is the glue that binds applications across the web. It is one the most powerful technologies to power the next generation service oriented web. Widely adopted by most of the popular vendors like Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Sun Microsystems, XML is becoming the de facto standard for for exchanging information, conducting transactions and syndicating content across the web. iMorph technologies in InfoMinder and Watch360 provide an XML based SOAP interface for integration into other applications. In addition, HyperScope, a prototype built for Bootstrap Alliance is completely based on XML and related technologies like XSL, XPATH, XPointer etc. RDFResource Description Framework (RDF) is a standard for describing resources on the web. It is a formal data model from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for machine understandable metadata used to provide standard descriptions of web resources. It uses eXtensible Markup Language (XML). It is similar in intent to the Dublin Core, although perhaps broader in its scope and purpose. iMorph uses RDF to power the Link/Annotation database used by HyperScope. This provides semantic linking capability across documents and provides facilities for link type extension.
